Architect – life enthusiast
My name is Johan Vonkavaara. I was born and raised a farm boy outside the city of Umeå in the north of Sweden, and am now a practicing architect in Stockholm. I discovered the beauty of architecture and world-making during my travels. Architecture is all around us, it’s in historic monuments, it’s in local food, it’s in the sound of the forest, it’s in how the human interacts with the world. Architecture is not only about buildings, but it’s a mindset and a way of looking at the world in a critical, visionary way. It is the footprint I will leave behind.

(2022 – now)
Currently working at BBH Arkitektur & Teknik in Stockholm, an office specializing in advanced solutions for public transport, with a high degree of knowledge in sustainability, accessibility and technical excellence.
Academic experience
Degree of Master of Architecture – Umeå School of Architecture.
(2016 – 2021)
An artistic architecture education that was focused on environmental and social sustainability, proposing utopian systems for future societies.
Other achievements
Competition entry: Plan-Skoga – Europan 16.
(2021)
A joined competition together with Yoko Xie, proposing a visionary dynamic city planning-concept for the expansion of a new city district in Karlskoga, Sweden.
Master Project Presentation – Venice Biennale.
(2021)
Master project “Plasticity”, a project about formal recognition of informal learning for Syrian refugees without proper documentation, was presented in the South Korean pavilion at the 2021 Venice Biennale.
Student Ambassador – Umeå University.
(2020-2021)
During my final year of studies, I was chosen to be a student ambassador, representing Umeå University and the Architecture School at different events.
Sustainability course participation – Sustainergies Academy.

A sustainability workshop-based course where students from different programmes learned about sustainable entrepreneurship through theories and practical experience.
